Diarrhea

 

What is it?
Diarrhea is an excessive amount of fluid in the stool, it is a common problem. Some of the common causes are viruses, bacterial infection, food allergies, medications, food poisoning, artificial sweeteners and alcohol abuse, as well as inflammatory bowel disease.

How is it diagnosed?
Depending on the cause of diarrhea, testing includes stool cultures, celiac panel blood work, hydrogen breath test – lactose intolerance, and/or a colonoscopy.

How is it treated?
To help minimize diarrheal episodes you can try over the counter treatments such as Pepto-Bismol® or Imodium®. However, it is important to discuss with your healthcare provider about further treatment of symptoms. Increasing fluid intake and avoiding solid food and dairy may help with symptoms.
